We Need to Address Our Democracy Deficit

It’s a cruel irony that the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States coincided with the 100th anniversary of John Dewey’s Democracy and Education.
Dewey wrote that “a government resting upon popular suffrage cannot be successful unless those who elect and who obey their governors are educated,” while pundits on both ends of the political spectrum seemed to conclude that only uneducated people were responsible for putting someone as clearly unqualified as Trump in power.
